EB3 India Backlog - Is Downgrade from EB2 Worth It?

I've been stuck in the EB2 India queue since 2018. My PD is January 2018 and at this rate, I might be waiting another 8-10 years.

I'm seriously considering downgrading to EB3. Here's my analysis:

Current EB2 India situation:

  • My PD: January 2018
  • Current Final Action Date: April 2012
  • Movement: ~2 months per year
  • Estimated wait: 8-10 years

EB3 India:

  • Current Final Action Date: January 2012
  • But moving faster lately (6-8 months per year)
  • Estimated wait if I downgrade: 5-7 yea...

I did this exact analysis a year ago and decided to downgrade. Here's my take:

Kids aging out was my main concern. My daughter turns 21 in 2030. With EB2 moving at current pace, there's no way we'd file I-485 before she ages out. With EB3, there's a much better chance.

Yes, you can file both EB2 and EB3 simultaneously (or do EB3 while keeping EB2 I-140 approved). Talk to your employer - most are supportive since they already invested in your GC process.

The math on this is interesting. At current movement rates:

EB2 India: ~2 months/year movement → Your 2018 PD becomes current in ~8 years (2033)

EB3 India: ~6 months/year movement → If you port 2018 PD to EB3, could become current in ~4-5 years

But these are projections and rates can change. The risk is EB2 suddenly speeds up after you downgrade. Still, historically EB3 has been catching up.
