H4 EAD Renewal - 180 Day Extension Rule Question

My H4 EAD expires in 2 months and I just filed for renewal. I have a few questions about the 180-day automatic extension.

My situation:

  • Current H4 EAD expires: December 15, 2025
  • Renewal filed: October 10, 2025
  • Receipt received: October 18, 2025

Questions:

  1. Am I eligible for the 180-day automatic extension?
  2. What document do I show my employer?
  3. If my H4 visa itself expires before EAD is renewed, does the extension still apply?

I had the same question about 180-day extension! From what I understand:

  1. Yes, you're eligible if you filed timely (before expiration) and it's the same category
  2. Show your employer: receipt notice + expired EAD + new I-94
  3. H4 status expiration is separate - your EAD extension doesn't depend on H4 stamp validity
  4. Currently H4 EADs are taking 3-6 months at most service centers

Your employer's HR should be familiar with this rule but sometimes they need documentation. USCIS has a FAQ page on it.
