I traveled on AP to India while my I-485 was pending. No problems at POE (San Francisco). The CBP officer was very matter-of-fact about it. I was nervous for nothing! For your grandfather, definitely go. Family is important. Just make sure your AP document covers your entire travel period.

I chose CP too! Best decision for my situation. Chennai was efficient and professional. The key is having all documents ready and organized. For anyone considering CP: it's faster IF you can travel and don't need EAD/AP while waiting. If you need to work for new employer or travel before GC, AOS makes more sense.
